Dirk Burton, Youth Minister at First Baptist Church, Kenner
Dirk Burton, Student Minister, spends so much time at church he decided to move in! The little white house behind the educational building which has served every group in the church at one time or other was recently renovated by the Baptist Men and turned into a home for Dirk, who is single. (Some people think he deserves serious overtime pay since all his time is spent at the office!)
Dirk owns the ideal resume for leading teenagers because in an earlier life he drove heavy machinery, did landscaping and electrical and plumbing work, and worked for a pest control service. He’s ready for anything the youth throw his way.
These days, Dirk is pursuing a degree in Christian Ministry at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, majoring in Biblical Studies and Psychology. Asked what he likes best about working at our church, he said, “The relaxed dress code—I get to wear my flip flops!” And least? “My office is usually too cold to wear flip flops!”
In his off time, Dirk loves to hunt and fish, read and hang out with his many friends. His favorite po-boy shop is Johnny’s on Decatur Street in the French Quarter. His favorite movie is “We Were Soldiers,” Shane & Shane is his favorite singing group, and able to take anyone out for a po-boy, he would choose Boudreaux, the mascot for our Zephyrs’ baseball team. Dirk is strange like that.
